Back pain affects about 80% of Americans at some point in their lives and is found in the lower, middle or upper back. Approximately 7.7 million Americans visit chiropractors each year to seek relief from back pain. There are a plethora of causes of back pain including arthritis, degenerative disc disease, nerve and muscular issues, strains, accidents and injuries.

There are two main types of injuries: spondylolisthesis and cervical radiculopathy. Spondyloloisthesis occurs when vertebrae at the base of the spine slip. This slipping of the vertebrae causes lower back pain, muscle tightness and stiffness, pain that spreads down to the legs, muscle weakness and discomfort that is literally a pain in the butt.

Additionally, cervical radiculopathy is the disturbance or damage of nerve function that occurs when nerve roots near the cervical vertebrae become compressed. Damage to these nerve roots may cause pain, numbness and weakness in the neck, arms and shoulders depending on the location of the damaged nerve roots.
